Plan Before You Plant

What do you want? Before you can choose a tree, ask yourself why you're planting one. Here are some of the most popular reasons for planting trees in the home garden.

  • Shade: Do you want to create shade in your yard? Choose a tree with a big canopy and provide plenty of shade.
  • Beauty: Consider adding some color or texture to your yard if you want to improve your curb appeal. A fantastic place to start is with ornamental and blooming trees.
  • Food: There's a lot of pride in producing your own fruit, nuts, or citrus trees. And you don't have to wait ten years to get any benefit from it. Many fruit trees are available in dwarf forms that produce fruit in as little as three to five years.
  • Privacy: Trees are a great option for creating a screen of privacy and softening harsh surroundings. They also outlast and are less expensive than traditional fences. There's lots of competition among fast-growing, private tree choices, so it's hard not to add more greenery to your yard.
  • Habitat: A backyard garden is incomplete without a wildlife habitat since it adds interest and beauty to the space. Whether it's birds, deer, squirrels, or rabbits, there's a tree for them all.

Site Conditions

Light Conditions

Some trees require more sun light while others prefer shade. Taking note of other trees in the vicinity is also important, as light conditions may vary as the trees grow.

Soil Moisture

Soil moisture is critical in order to have healthy trees. Soil composition also plays into the equation and determines the availability of water to the tree.

PH level in soil

Some conifers (or evergreens) prefer a more acidic soil. In certain situations, we'll collect a soil sample for lab analysis that will allow us to dial in the perfect conditions for the trees being installed.

Tree Selection

Right tree, right site! One of the biggest issues we see when it comes to trees is the fact that many  are planted in the wrong location based on their need for sunlight, moisture, nutrients and space. In addition, many "run of the mill" trees and shrubs are susceptible to disease and insect infestation. So, if you're thinking about planting, be sure to consult the expertise of one of our Certified Arborists.
